What is a lightweight membrane structure?

When you start exploring the world of canopies, you will undoubtedly come across the term. A membrane—put simply—refers to the fabric itself.
Flexible & adaptable

But why do higher-end providers of shade covers often refer to a membrane structure or membrane canopy? A lightweight membrane structure is made from flexible, adaptable material that can range from 'simple' sun covers to complete roofs for stadiums.

Examples of membranes

People often mention the Olympic Stadium in Munich or the O2 Arena in London. But did you know there are also examples closer to home? For instance, Tentech is a Dutch company that designs membrane structures worldwide. They have contributed to the well-known festival Tomorrowland and the impressive canopy of the Leidsche Rijn bus station.

Textile architecture

As you can see, the world of membranes is not limited by countries or even continents. The technology that allows large spaces to be covered with relatively lightweight materials is applied globally. We contribute by translating this to a residential scale, making it possible to realise beautiful textile architecture at home.

High elasticity

The technology behind creating a high-quality membrane is what sets it apart. It ensures that the fabric is placed under what is known as 'pre-tension.' This means fully utilising the elasticity of the fibres. In this state, a membrane can absorb loads, distribute them evenly, and then release them. Thanks to its high elasticity, it can handle not only wind loads (pressure from below), but also loads from above, such as rainfall.

Ingenious interplay

Through ingenious interplay of mast, cable, and arch constructions, large surfaces can be spanned with relatively lightweight material. A canopy of over 100 square metres weighs only 35 kilograms. With minimal material, breathtaking architectural spaces can be created at home.

Preserving natural light

During the day, you maintain pleasant, warm natural lighting in your home. This is especially true with lighter sand tones such as Taupe or Sandstone. When dusk falls, you can determine the colour of the membrane through lighting. Instead of lighting from above downward, the membrane is illuminated from below. This allows you to create your desired atmosphere and enjoy pleasant acoustics beneath it.

Under the canopy, a different rhythm emerges. The shade moves with the day. The terrace stays cooler and more inviting for longer. Not enclosed, but seamlessly connected to the surrounding outdoor space.
