Inspiration | Shade & cooling

Shade, light and direction: a design that fits the place

In Bergharen, there was a terrace that served its purpose, but did not quite tell a story. A parasol provided shade but felt disconnected from the house and its surroundings. It offered cooling, but no real sense of calm. The question to Manta Roofs was simple yet precise. Can something be created here that truly fits the place?
The solution

Not a standard shade cover, but a design that responds to the architecture, the light, and everyday use. A custom sail in Slate Heather now forms a clean, defined surface above the terrace. The posts are finished in the same RAL colour as the window frames, making the entire structure feel natural—almost as if it was always meant to be there.

The design

The design starts from how the space is used. The previous parasol provided insufficient shade during the day and still allowed strong sunlight into the home. By positioning the canopy higher near the window area, sunlight is filtered earlier. Light is kept outside while the view remains open. From the kitchen, you still look out over the pool, but without glare or excess heat.

Under the canopy, a different rhythm emerges. The shade moves with the day. The terrace stays cooler and more inviting for longer. Not enclosed, but seamlessly connected to the surrounding outdoor space.
